Zig’s  Philosophy on Gear -  some Zig Quotes:

“I’ve always believed that it’s not the equipment,  but the ears and skills of the people using it that matters most, and of course good songs, and good players and singers.”

“I use the equipment I can afford and I  get a great sound because I know the difference.   I’ve worked on SSL, Trident, MCI, Sony, Harrison, and Amek, as well as Fostex, Mackie, Adats, Tascam, and Digi 001.”

“Through the years I’ve spent a ton of money on equipment but when you’re recording the magic always comes from the song, or the players, or the engineer, or the singer,  the equipment is just the tool.”

Zig’s Philosophy on the Recording Process - more Zig Quotes:

“I don’t like to cut a bunch of tracks that we aren’t gonna use and then spend even more time listening back to them and comping them or cutting and pasting them together when it would be quicker to play it again - and play what we really want  - and have more of a natural feel.”

“I don’t like to tune a vocal till it sounds like a vocorder,  or over-compress the final mix so much that every note is at maximum volume!”

“Just because the equipment allows you to cut and paste doesn’t mean you should approach your performance with the goal of just making it through the 1st verse and then stop and copy that verse, or just sing one chorus correctly then paste it everywhere else in the song .”

“I believe that when there are two ways to get something done in the studio  - the first way through performance, and the second way through digital editing and  piecing it together - it will almost always sound better and have a better feel the first way.”

“And…  it’s also a choice of how  you want to spend your time - playing and singing music?…. or sitting staring at a computer screen cutting and pasting and editing?  I love music, I’d rather play it 10 times than spend 15 minutes with a mouse and a screen.”

“I’ve been cutting demos for songwriters, and producing artists and bands since the ’80s - country and rock, blues and jazz, old gospel and bluegrass, tejano and salsa…..and I’ve done modern, current county and pop as well - and I think music is about CONTENT and FEEL and EMOTION and PERFORMANCE. ”

“A good engineer or producer knows how to recognize those elements and how to help an artist capture  those elements. ”
